To help you meet the needs of your employees, we work with you to design a pension plan that fits both your company and government regulations. Once you choose the plan type that works for you, our team provides a comprehensive document that is the basis of the plan administration. Everything in that legal document must be complied with. For your peace of mind, we take the time to let you know what you can and cannot do under the plan, from contributions and deductibility to withdrawals to transactions.

Staying in Compliance

The US government oversees all pension plan documents and their administration, so we are obligated to keep you in compliance with any new changes to the law. Every four to five years, our team determines if your plan document needs to be updated, creating a plan restatement that ensures your document incorporates new laws, guidelines, and deadlines. We then provide you a new copy and sit with you to answer questions or address concerns.

Staff Biography

Valerie Christiansen

Valerie has worked for Southwest Pension Services, Inc since 2002.  Her main duties entail: accounts payable/receivable, contribution/loan payment processing, clerical/secretarial work and she fills in where needed as receptionist.

Alongside working for Southwest Pension Services, Valerie also works as a licensed agent of life and health insurance for Christiansen & Associates, Inc.  She has helped individuals and businesses with their insurance needs since 1987.  Her love for working in the employee benefits industry has carried over to her employee benefits work here at SWP.

Valerie was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah and attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where she received her education in Business Education.  Desiring a little adventure and break-from-the-norm, she moved to Honolulu, where she worked for McDonnell & Company, Inc. for two years.  Following her adventure in Hawaii she returned to Salt Lake City and started work for Bache and Co. as an executive secretary.  Her wanderlust set in again, so she and her family decided to move to Las Vegas in 1978 to set up roots and continued raising her family.

Valerie has dedicated a portion of her free time to service within her church.  She loves photography and decided to pursue her new found hobby by purchasing her first digital camera in 2008.  She has been a member of the Nevada Camera Club since 2009 and served in 2012 as the House Committee Chairman.  She is currently serving as a trustee on the Nevada Camera Club board and helps with print take-in for competitions.  Family is also an important part of Valerie's life and she especially enjoys cooking for and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  So far there have been no complaints from the home-cooked meal recipients.

Valerie's talents and experience that she brings to the pension business is undoubtedly a great asset to the company.  She enjoys helping others as is seen from her service to her family, church and community.  The rewarding part of her work within this service-oriented retirement industry comes when she hears the words of gratitude from the clients she so closely works with.

Robert L. Christiansen (Bob)

Bob was born and raised in Ely, Nevada and therefore "Home means Nevada" to him as his state song proclaims.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Sociology/Chemistry from the University of Utah and Brigham Young University (BYU).  He later graduated from BYU with a Master of Science in Social Psychology.

Bob has owned his own employee benefit company, Christiansen & Associates, Inc. in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1978.  The company was incorporated in 1985 and has provided employee benefit services and life insurance programs to numerous employers and individuals in Las Vegas.

Bob became president of Southwest Pension Services, Inc. in 1992 when he purchased the company and has provided third party administration and actuarial services for countless employers in the Las Vegas Valley.

He is securities licensed by obtaining  his Series 7 & Series 63 licenses in 1986 and has maintained those licenses ever since.  These licenses have enabled him to provide enrollment services to plan participants and investment advice to employers and employees alike.

Bob has provided church service his entire life as it brings him great joy to assist those within his church.  He has also provided military service within the United States Air Force, which included serving during the Vietnam War.  He retired in 1993 from the Air Force after serving for 20 years as a Lt. Colonel.

The reason Bob is in the retirement plan administration business is this: “I enjoy helping business owners implement the retirement plan which best meets their needs.  There are many options.  Helping them to discover the right plan through proposals and explanations is challenging and satisfying to me.  Then helping them keep their plan in full compliance through our administration process adds to my satisfaction.  We are always available to answer our client’s questions, and at least once a year at Form 5500 signing time we meet with them to review the plan’s progress even filing the signed Form 5500 electronically for them.”

Corazon Ulep (Cora)

Cora is a long-term employee of Southwest Pension Services, Inc. She has been providing steady service to clients while with Southwest Pension Services since June 1, 1988. Her duties include, but are not limited to: trust accounting, vested account allocations and the production of a wide range of qualified pension tax returns.

Prior to working for Southwest Pension Services, Cora worked as a customer service specialist for Hawaiian Life Insurance Company for 16 years. Her dedication and devotion to outstanding customer service has carried over to her service with us here at SWP. Cora graduated from Northwestern College in 1964 in Laoag City, Philippines with a degree in Business Administration as an accounting major. Cora is a Registered Tax Return Preparer (RTRP) and a member of National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP). She is also licensed as an agent to sell life & health insurance.

Cora enjoys volunteering for her church as a 1st service greeter while it gives her the opportunity to meet new people and share her wonderful smile with everyone. Part of her free time is spent cultivating her home's flower garden, she particularly enjoys caring for her Bougainvilleas, a vibrant reminder of Hawaiian flora and receives great satisfaction from watching them flourish. Family is an important part of Cora's life and she especially enjoys playing with her grandchildren, which evokes smiles that last a lifetime.

The reason behind Cora's commitment to servicing our clients: "It has been a pleasure sharing my knowledge in accounting and also learning about pension plans. Servicing clients is an feels like I'm doing something special for them."

Robert N. Christiansen (Rob)

Rob worked part time for Southwest Pension Services during summers while attending Brigham Young University until he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in German in 1998.  Rob married his wife soon after graduation and moved to Las Vegas where he began his career with Southwest Pension Services in August of 1998.  During his time at BYU he was able to take several business & accounting classes, which have been a resource in his administrative work with SWP.

Among Rob's duties here at SWP are:  staff management, information technology, trust accounting, plan document origination & design, plan testing, plan restatements, contribution allocations, pension tax return production and electronic filing of returns.

Rob enjoys taking fitness classes, being in the outdoors, spending time at nearby parks with his family, taking family vacations and gardening.  He and his family have been transforming their backyard into a "green paradise" since 1999, where they can go to enjoy the cooler months of Las Vegas.  Rob is an Eagle Scout and has enjoyed passing along his knowledge of scouting to boy scouts and cub scouts as an adult leader in his church scouting units.

In Rob's own words, this is why he enjoys working at SWP:  "The pension world is a vast world of information, very technical and is constantly changing.  It keeps me on my toes learning new ERISA laws, administrative skills & plan design techniques.  It is a pleasure to apply my retirement plan knowledge in helping our clients achieve retirement goals for themselves and their employees."
